Part 1 (Bird-like drone LisEagle & Design Challenge)

Hi! Hope you are excited to learn more about how engineering scientists tackle complex problems. Before we proceed, what do you think engineering science is? Engineering integrates engineering and scientific practices to address novel challenges. Think about designing future drones. Currently, most of the drones that have blades like helicopters can fly only for a short time, so their usefulness is limited. Compared to planes that have fixed wings, they can fly faster but they do not have the agility and flexibility to land in crowded places with precision. Birds, on the other hand, are masters of the sky. Hence several scientists and engineers are exploring ways to make drones that can flap like birds! Its worth taking a break and watching this short video where researchers at EPFL have designed a drone inspired by the design of a hawk, and it can do various amazing things! One of the most interesting things it can do is to change the shape of its wings and tail. That allows very fine adjustments to the changing environment conditions.
