Introduction

What keeps a plane up in the air?

Here’s the quick answer: air pushes up on the wings (lift) and the engine pushes forward (thrust), while gravity pulls down (weight) and air resistance pushes back (drag). A plane flies when lift and thrust are strong enough to balance weight and drag.1

There are four forces that keep a plane in the air:

  • Weight (gravity): the downward pull of Earth.
  • Thrust: the forward push from engines, flapping, or a propeller.
  • Drag: the backward force from air resistance.
