Do you know the different birds have different wing shapes that allow them to fly differently? In general, there are four different wing types that are very common. These are,

Passive soaring wings

  • These wings shapes are wide and have slots at the end.
  • Bald eagles have this wing type. These help them catch the thermal updrafts and fly for longer periods without flapping.1

Active soaring wings

  • These have long shape.
  • Albatross has this wing shape. These help them fly long distances during migration without using much energy. The wings also help them catch the horizontal air current like sea breezes2

Elliptical wings

  • These are more round and broad in shape. These help birds for quick turns and escape when attacked by predators.
  • Sparrow has this wing type and Turkey too. To stay up in the air, the birds has to spend a lot of energy as they need to flap their wings a lot.12

High-speed wings

  • These aren’t as long as passive or soaring wing type but these are still pointed towards the ends. It helps birds fly at super fast speed. They need to as long as active or passive soaring wings. They may appear pointed at the ends. Like the name implies, high-speed wings are great for rapid movement. However, the bird must spend lots of energy through flapping to reach high speeds. This makes these wings ideal for short bursts of speed, such as chasing down a flying prey animal or insect.

Hovering wings

  • Imagine moving your arms backward and forwards your arms 80 times in a second! That’s how fast hummingbirds flap their wings. Their wings are very small and super light!
  • Their muscles are incredibly strong to support the flapping motions and their reflexes are super sharp. Do you know they can fly backwards too? If you ever get close to these birds, you can listen to the sound that they make when they flap their wings. It’s like a high-speed fan! Also, they fly in the figure of eight! Super cool, isn’t it? Try moving your arms in the way hummingbirds move their wings in eight! Hummingbirds have this wing type. It allows them to flap their wings really, really fast. They can drink nector from the flower while hovering at a same place. Here is a slow motion video of their wing movements!
